The world’s first wristwatch with a dual frequency locator beacon

Breitling has solidified its position in the realm of technical watches and instruments for professionals with the creation of the world's first wristwatch featuring a built-in personal locator beacon (PLB). Dubbed the Emergency, this high-tech timepiece boasts a dual-frequency transmitter that adheres to the specifications of the Cospas-Sarsat international satellite alert system. It serves the dual purpose of issuing alerts and aiding in search and rescue missions.

Developed in collaboration with prominent scientific institutes, the Emergency stands out for its numerous microelectronic and microtechnical innovations. These include a revolutionary rechargeable battery, a miniaturized dual-frequency transmitter, and an unprecedented integrated antenna system — all three of which were specifically crafted for this model.

As the first ever wristworn dual frequency PLB, it establishes itself as a safety and survival instrument in all distress situations on land, at sea and in the air.

A Breitling specialty

In 1995, Breitling made a significant breakthrough by launching the first wristwatch with a built-in emergency microtransmitter. Operating on the 121.5 MHz international air distress frequency, this initial Emergency model was designed to facilitate accurate homing in on pilots or passengers following a plane crash. Intended for constant wear on the wrist, it complemented standard onboard aircraft equipment.

The first Emergency has undergone rigorous testing and has been worn daily by top aviation professionals and the world’s leading aeronautical teams. It has demonstrated its value in numerous search and rescue exercises, becoming synonymous with safety and reliability for pilots worldwide. Approximately 40,000 of these watches have been purchased to locate and rescue people in danger, and they have proven to be exceptional life-saving tools.

Building on this successful and extensive experience, Breitling has achieved a new and unprecedented technical feat by presenting the new Emergency with a built-in personal locator beacon.

A chronometer-certified multifunction chronograph

The Emergency is more than just a personal survival instrument; it's also an electronic chronograph packed with features essential for professionals and adventurers alike. It boasts a 12/24-hour analog and digital display, 1/100th second chronograph, alarm, timer, second timezone, multilingual calendar, and battery end-of-life indication. Powered by a thermocompensated SuperQuartz™ movement, it's ten times more accurate than standard quartz and chronometer-certified by the COSC (Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute) — the pinnacle of precision and reliability in the industry. The watch and transmitter components are designed as two separate elements, ensuring operational independence and enhanced security.

Sturdy and technical design

Crafted from titanium, the preferred metal in aeronautics for its strength, lightness, anti-magnetic properties, corrosion resistance, and non-allergenic qualities, the Emergency features a highly intricate case. It's available with a choice of three dial colors—black, yellow, or orange—and can be paired with a titanium bracelet or rubber strap. The satin-brushed bezel is adorned with a compass scale, adding to its robust, technical allure. With sapphire crystal glare-proofing on both sides and luminescent hands and numerals, readability is optimal in any conditions. It's unmatched functionality for the world's first wristwatch with a built-in dual-frequency personal locator beacon.
