The Story

On May 24, 1962, astronaut Scott Carpenter orbited Earth three times on NASA’s Mercury-Atlas 7 mission. On his wrist was a one-of-a-kind Breitling Navitimer—custom-built for space. At his request, it featured a wider bezel for gloved hands, a stretch-metal bracelet to fit over his spacesuit, and most crucially, a 24-hour dial. In orbit, where the sun rises and sets every 90 minutes, that display would keep him grounded in time. Delivered just days before liftoff, it became the first Swiss wristwatch in space. Now, to mark the centenary of Scott Carpenter’s birth, Breitling presents the Navitimer B02 Chronograph 41 Cosmonaute Scott Carpenter Centenary. Cased in platinum, it’s a tribute to one of the great names in space exploration. The deep blue dial evokes the color of Earth as seen from space—vivid, saturated, and unforgettable—while the crisp white slide rule recalls its swirling cloud cover. The same blue carries through to the alligator-leather strap, secured with a white-gold folding clasp. Unique bridge engravings commemorate the journey: “Carpenter,” his capsule “Aurora 7,” “3 orbits around the Earth,” “Mercury 7,” and the centenary itself—“Scott Carpenter Centenary 1925–2025.” Caseback inscriptions include “First Swiss wristwatch in space” and “One of 50.” The watch is presented in a wooden display box marked with the date of the 1962 mission and accompanied by a replica of Carpenter’s Mercury 7 name badge. A timepiece that connects Earth and orbit—built for the bold, then and now.

The watch that endured

Though the original Cosmonaute was damaged by saltwater after splashdown, it survived as a powerful relic of space history. Its damaged dial, now eerily planetary in appearance, remained unseen in the Breitling family archives until 2022. With this centenary edition, Breitling reawakens a story that once reached the stars—inviting a new generation to rediscover the spirit that carried Carpenter into orbit.
